Dear Colleagues,
Following a marvelous career of 44 years in education I am facing the realization that I will likely be leaving the work to younger folks sometime within the next five years. So naturally I am concerned about leaving a passionate cadre of people to carry on my life’s work. Therefore, I am going to hold the fourth Lynn Erickson Institute in the summer of 2012 (July 14-20) to certify educators to be expert trainers of Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction. The institute will be held in beautiful Whitefish, Montana, at the Grouse Mountain Lodge www.grousemountainlodge.com .
The 2009 - 2011 Certification Institutes were a great success and participants expressed their feelings about the training experiences:
“Many educators talk about including Essential Understandings in their curricula but few models offer the depth of understanding regarding both the why and how to include them in curriculum writing. Dr. Erickson’s training institute for Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction offers a sure way to provide your staff representatives with the knowledge and skills they need to transform teaching in your schools. Her expertise, combined with the expertise and skills of the content area specialists provide a supportive adult learning environment in which both novices and veterans can succeed and excel with the implementation of a concept-based model. I am honored to have been a part of the maiden voyage and am pleased to endorse this institute as one of the most significant training experiences of my career.” Janice DiVincenzo, Literacy, Social Studies and Summer Bridges Coordinator, Waukegan Public Schools, Waukegan, Illinois.
“Having the opportunity to spend focused learning time with Lynn Erickson, content area specialists, and participants from the United States and other countries on the facilitation and presentation of concept-based curriculum and instruction was a tremendously rewarding experience. I look forward to sharing the powerful message of concept-based curriculum and instruction as an independent consultant.” Dr. Michael Schwei, Keller, Texas
“Thank YOU, Lynn! Last week was fabulous in so many ways! The crisp air and
beautiful scenery was good for my soul, and the intellectual stimulation of the
workshop was good for my brain! There’s nothing I love more than learning- when
WHAT I’m learning makes so much sense! The connections- the potential- and
the possibilities are very exciting! Your work is incredibly valuable Lynn, and
I’m looking forward to sharing it with as many teachers and administrators as I
can. Also, the design of the workshop was masterful! I loved the opportunities
to work in small group with the specialists. That guided practice- in ELA,
Science, SS and Math provided just what we needed- meaningful conversations,
with a talented bunch of educators, for the purpose of “making sense”. Julie Crotty, 2011 Area Education Agency, Instructional Consultant, Cedar Falls, Iowa
The Letter of Invitation which will be sent out August 2011, provides details of the training, criteria for applying, and costs. I will have four specialists present, whom I already certified, to provide additional focused training during the week, in the areas of Mathematics, Social Studies, English/Language Arts, and Science. There will only be 30 slots available. The slots will be filled based on the application information. School districts may submit more than one application if they wish–and the applicants can be elementary focused, secondary focused, or both.
If a school district sponsors an employee(s) to participate in the institute then the participant will be certified to train within the sponsoring district only . If an educator wishes to apply as an independent participant they would pay the fees and expenses themselves–or they may choose a shared cost option with their school district. With the individual payment or shared cost option, the participant would be certified to advertise themselves as an independent consultant and could present at conferences and accept national and international requests to train on concept-based curriculum and instruction for fees. They will not be required to pay any fees to Lynn Erickson following the training.
In additiion to Certification and Licensing, participants will receive:
- Books/Support Materials by H. Lynn Erickson (Corwin Press Publishers)
- Stirring the Head, Heart and Soul: Redefining Curriculum, Instruction, and Concept-based Learning, c. 2008 PLUS a Facilitator’s Guide to assist trainers using the book with teachers.
