Institute Testimonials

Dear Colleagues,

Please read about the 2017 Dr. H. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois A. Lanning Concept-based Certification Institute with Rachel French to be held July 1-8, 2017 in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Information can be found on the NEWS page of this website.

The 2009 – 2016 Concept-based Certification Institutes were a great success and participants expressed their feelings about the training experiences:

“Many educators talk about including Conceptual Understandings in their curricula but few models offer the depth of understanding regarding both the why and how to include them in curriculum writing. Dr. Erickson’s training institute for Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction offers a sure way to provide your staff representatives with the knowledge and skills they need to transform teaching in your schools. Her expertise, combined with the expertise and skills of the content area specialists provide a supportive adult learning environment in which both novices and veterans can succeed and excel with the implementation of a concept-based model. I am honored to have been a part of the maiden voyage and am pleased to endorse this institute as one of the most significant training experiences of my career.” Janice DiVincenzo, Literacy, Social Studies and Summer Bridges Coordinator, Waukegan Public Schools

Catch phrases such as “21st century learning skills”, “conceptual understanding”, and “ student motivation” are floating around all over academics these days. But rarely does someone articulate and develop a clear road map to tackle these problems, especially at the classroom level. Lynn Erickson’s concept-based certification training is powerful and different in that it not only enables us to ‘unpack’ these issues at a meta-cognitive level, but also goes further into developing practical strategies to ensure that these understandings transpire into actual classroom practice in teaching and learning. I attended the training in two capacities. One, as a doctoral researcher on curriculum issues in international schools, and two, as a Curriculum coordinator in an international school. I must say that the certification program with Lynn and the various subject area specialists has indeed added value to both of my roles in a powerful and engaging way. Rarely do we come across workshops that deal with theory and practice in such a rigorous and yet challenging way that provides food for thought for the “head, the heart and the soul”! I would say, a necessary ‘investment’ for anyone wanting to explore and work with curriculum in the 21st century!! 2012 Sudha Sunder, ICT and Curriculum Integration Coordinator, Universal American School, Dubai

I strongly believe that education must empower our young people to be able to make connections, think for themselves and transfer their learning from one situation to another, be it familiar or unfamiliar. As a student, I struggled making those connections between my classroom learning and its relevance to the real world. Knowledge seemed disconnected and I had no choice but to memorise facts to pass the examinations. As a teacher, while I knew I wanted my students to understand and not just know the subject matter, I did not have the right tools and approach until someone introduced me to Dr. Lynn Erickson’s work in the field of concept based curriculum and instruction.

In my opinion, the Structure of Knowledge and the Structure of Process as conceptualised by Dr. Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois Lanning are a breakthrough for those interested in creating concept-driven and inquiry-based classrooms. They provide teachers the much needed scaffolding to design and deliver instruction that ignites “synergistic thinking” and keeps students’ conceptual minds intellectually and emotionally engaged.

The week at the Concept Based Curriculum Institute was full of excitement and rich discussions. Lynn, Lois and all the presenters, with their hands-on and minds-on learning engagements, kept the heads and hearts of all participants inspired. It was one of the best professional development experiences I have ever had.” Ashish Trivedi, MYP School Services Manager, Asia Pacific, International Baccalaureate Organization
