Catch phrases such as “21st century learning skills”, “conceptual understanding”, and “ student motivation” are floating around all over academics these days. But rarely does someone articulate and develop a clear road map to tackle these problems, especially at the classroom level. Lynn Erickson’s concept-based certification training is powerful and different in that it not only enables us to ‘unpack’ these issues at a meta-cognitive level, but also goes further into developing practical strategies to ensure that these understandings transpire into actual classroom practice in teaching and learning. I attended the training in two capacities. One, as a doctoral researcher on curriculum issues in international schools, and two, as a Curriculum coordinator in an international school. I strongly believe that education must empower our young people to be able to make connections, think for themselves and transfer their learning from one situation to another, be it familiar or unfamiliar. As a student, I struggled making those connections between my classroom learning and its relevance to the real world. Knowledge seemed disconnected and I had no choice but to memorise facts to pass the examinations. As a teacher, while I knew I wanted my students to understand and not just know the subject matter, I did not have the right tools and approach until someone introduced me to Dr. Lynn Erickson’s work in the field of concept based curriculum and instruction.
